After missing the final four regular-season games due to personal reasons, Seaside lineman Mana Tuivailala thought he'd never play football again. "I called him and told him to turn in his uniform,'' recalled Seaside coach Al Avila. "He came in and said, 'Coach, I still want to play football .' "I think his family realized that football was important to him and it's what he wanted to do.''

Senior Calvin Hampton has one major role with Oregon State this season. And it isn't to provide points.

One of the Beavers' team captains, he's in charge of pre-game motivational speeches, and he gave a good one prior to OSU's 62-42 rout of rival Oregon on Feb. 6.

Hampton played just two scoreless minutes in the game, but his work was done beforehand.

"Usually, I prepare my speech, and I give a nice, good speech," Hampton told the Oregonian. "But today, it was all emotional in me."

Hampton had nothing prepared, just whatever came out of his mouth.

"I kind of was at a loss for words because I didn't prepare a speech," he said. "I kind of looked at everybody, and everybody was looking at me, like, 'Whatcha gonna say?'

"I just said, 'It's time,...

You all ready to go out there and kill 'em?'" His teammates' reaction? "Everybody just started screaming," Hampton said. "I couldn't talk anymore." The results spoke for themselves. "My last Civil War," Hampton said. "Good to get the sweep, man."

SEASON RECAP: The Beavers staggered through an uneven non-conference schedule with a 6-5 record. They continue to defy predictions, as perhaps the Pac-10's most unpredictable team. Consider they own a road win over Oregon and home victories against Arizona and USC, but lost to Stanford by 24 points and to Seattle by 51. The Beavers hope their 20-point rout of Oregon nudges them in the right direction for good. PLAYER ROTATION: Usual Starters -- F Seth Tarver, C Roeland Schaftenaar, G Calvin Haynes, G Jared Cunningham, G Lathen Wallace. Key Subs -- C Calvin Hampton, F Daniel Deane, F Joe Burton, G Josh Tarver. GAME REVIEW: Oregon State 51, USC 46 UCLA 62, Oregon State 52 Oregon State 62, Oregon 42 GAME PREVIEW: at Arizona State, Thursday, Feb. 11 at Arizona, Saturday, Feb. 13 vs. Cal, Thursday, Feb. 18 vs. Stanford, Saturday, Feb. 20 at UCLA, Thursday, Feb. 25 IN FOCUS: The Beavers hope to pull off something they haven't achieved since the 1982-83 campaign -- a season-sweep of Arizona. OSU knocked off the Wildcats 67-64 in Corvallis, fueled by senior C Roeland Schaftenaar's season-high 22 points. ROSTER REPORT: --Junior F Omari Johnson scored a season-high 18 points in the win over Oregon, more points than he'd scored in the previous eight games combined. --Freshman PG Jared Cunningham had one of his better games against the Ducks, contributing 11 points, four assists and four steals, although he still turned the ball over five times. --Junior G Calvin Haynes had 11 points, four assists and three steals against Oregon.

--Oregon State completed its first Civil War season sweep since 1992-93. Oregon State holds a 183-150 lead over Oregon in the most contested rivalry in Division I men's basketball history. "It really is meaningful to get a sweep when we haven't had it in a long time, and it's meaningful to the program," coach Craig Robinson said. "We've made ourselves relevant in the league again." --OSU was credited with 20 assists on its 21 field goals against Oregon. ON THE SPOT: Senior G Seth Tarver is one of the best free-throw shooters on a very average foul-shooting team. He converts 72.5 percent, while the Beavers are making just 67 percent as a team. Problem is Tarver isn't getting to the line enough. Over the past six games, he's attempted just seven free throws, and made just three. He was 49-for-64 through OSU's first 16 games. The Beavers need a more aggressive Tarver to get to the line and provide those "free" points. QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think it meant a lot to us but I think it meant more to our fans because they haven't seen a win like this in a while. We haven't had a blowout Pac-10 win in I don't know how long, and this just I guess made them feel good." -- Junior Omari Johnson, after the 20-point win over Oregon on the enthusiastic reaction of 9,124 fans at Gill Coliseum.

One of the smallest recruiting classes of recent decades at Oregon State received scant attention from the recruiting services, but the Beavers will take the results.

They especially loaded up on the defensive line, with five of their 16 signees in that one area of obvious need. They brought in a touted quarterback, meeting their goal to keep at least one in each class, and even a kicker to prepare for the future.

Oregon State coach Mike Riley said recruiting "started out being difficult because we did not have the normal 25 guys we were going to be able to sign. We tried to earmark positional needs. From there we got the best players we could surrounding those needs."

The relatively small class came about because the Beavers had only 12 seniors on the roster in...
